label update: from now on, label news will be posted on a brand new blog, right here: bassesfrequences.wordpress.com

last mailorder update: july the 1st:
* I bought back from a small russian distro 5 copies of IAMSEAMONSTER "nebulum/constellatrix" CDR ! these are surely the last 5 copies available for sell !

* from july the 3rd, my post office will be closed until early august. so i'll have to go to another town to ship the orders. the closest towns are smaller than mine and those post offices are not open all day long, so i may not be able to ship orders as often as usual. once, maybe twice a week at the most. sorry for the inconvenience !

NICHOLAS SZCZEPANIK : dear dad (basses frequences & goat eater arts)
MP3: when i'm no longer afraid of you (sample)

[US] After a serie of 3"CDR dedicated to people he loves, Nicholas created these two parts album for his father with another sensibility than just love and dedication. the track titles - "when i'm no longer afraid of you" and "forgive to forget" - give us the mood. But apart from the very personnal approach, "dear dad" is also a wonderful work, some of the most beautiful wall of noise and drones i have ever heard, that will make you travel into your innerself. You can definitively be part of them since the sounds are physicaly into the room, without thinking one second on how and why they were created in the first place. that's the other strengh of that record, you'll learn a bit more about its composer and also about yourself.
Each copy is unique, adorned with a single postage stamp.

THISQUIETARMY : aftermath (basses frequences)
MP3: melted leads on ashen fileds

[CA] Aftermath is thisquietarmy's fourth album and first for Basses Fréquences. Partially inspired and in respect to aesthetics by the works of German visual artist Anselm Kiefer, the setting of Aftermath takes place in the post-apocalyptic countryside and revolves around fallen angels as unexploded ordnances. In parallel, the compositions were also inspired by the sounds of crackling tubes and failing resistors captured by amplifiers during the recording process. Drones and melodies were built around these hissing sounds to create moods of tension and transitions from the remnants of destruction. These static interferences thus remained as important compositional elements, as if the whole themed-universe stemmed from a faraway buzz, in which the dawn of a new era reveals itself. With Aftermath, thisquietarmy manages to create the perfect light and heavy post-nuclear winter atmosphere, with a glimmer of hope appearing slowly like sun rays through massive dust clouds.

AIDAN BAKER : i will always and forever hold you in my heart and mind (basses frequences & small doses)
MP3: always | my

[CA] CD reissue of this album previously released on CDR on Small Doses.
This is a stunning new full-length solo work from the man behind Nadja and Arc. A 51 minute work of shimmering, pulsating drone broken into twelve parts (one for each word of the title) that come together to form a seemless, wordless narrative.

july 1st update:

I AM SEAMONSTER : nebulum / constellatrix (basses frequences)
MP3: nebulum sample

[US] 5 copies ! i managed to buy back 5 copies from a small russian distro that wasn't able to sell them. so that's it, the last 5 copies available !

i guess you guys have no idea how GOOD this is. IAS is not very well known, but deserve much more attention and offers here what i consider as real masterpiece of drone. "nebulum" is a 30 minutes long wall of noise of bliss drones - a lot of other guys will be jealous about that - something so intense (but delightfull) that the image of a real "shower of light" came in mind immediatly. play it loud and you'll leave earth for half an hour. very deep and addictive. "constellatrix" is pretty much the oposite: low, humble and dark and sounds parfect as the "after", something to rest a bit after the experience that "nebulum" is. and i don't say all that because i'm releasing it, this wasn't meant for me in the first place, but i'm really proud to do it finally.

[CA] "definitive contemporary issue of charlemagne palestine’s landmark 1974 sonnabend gallery lp, recorded by phillip glass’ engineer kurt munkasci in new york that winter & featuring a series of gorgeous, chiming, polyrhythmic solo piano pieces bookended by two electronic drone works ...

june 7 update:

NADJA & TROUM : dominium visurgis (transgredient)

[CA/Ger] "This is something you could call a "dreamlike liaison". When the Canadian "avant metal / drone doom"-duo NADJA (who name TROUM as one of their early influences) and the German post-industrial / experimental drone pioneers TROUM (years ago active as MAEROR TRI who are still discovered by many drone-fans these days) combine their exceptional styles, they form something even vaster as usually known from them. These three long collaboration tracks were recorded as a result of a spontaneous improvisation in April 2008 "live in the studio" near the Weser-river in Bremen, Germany, and suck you in with their powerful & emotional drone melancholy that works in many micro-& macrocosmic ways, using electric & acoustic guitars, bass, accordeon, drum-machine & voice."
beautifully packed in a 8 panel digipack

CD 11

NADJA : ruins of morning (Substantia Innominata )

[CA] experience the avantgardish drone-metal duo at their most dark & beautiful; 500 copies on GOLDen vinyl, fantastic artwork by Marcin Lojek (ibsendesign.pl). One very long track spread on two sides / parts

10" 12

NADJA : under the jaguar sun (beta lactam ring)

[CA] "Both CD’s have been composed to also be played simultaneously, in a much more useable fashion than the Zaireekas of the world. So, if “Tezcatlipoca” is overground and “Quetzalcoatl” is underground (or, more likely, the reverse) their combination must be all things….and no things. Maybe the sound of the end of things. The resultant juxtaposition is a colossal celestial being smiling down on all he tramples.
Packaged in a full color custom made book bound 10 panel sleeve."

NADJA & OVO : life and death of a wasp (broken spine)

[CA] CD version of the LP previously released on Vendetta (still available below). digipack

THISQUIETARMY & AIDAN BAKER : a picture of a picture (killer pimp)

[CA]" For their first full-length album, Baker & Quach have decided to do things differently by setting a simple rule beforehand: the record was to be played and recorded live together, adding a very minimal amount of overdubs if not any. The recording session took place in the fall of 2007, in Quach's own home studio TQA-HQ in Montreal. Because of their very busy schedule, it took about a year before the two artists decided to get together to work on these tracks again. This time, Baker finalized the mixes in his home studio, resulting again in four long movements, clocking at around an hour's length. Instead of the overall terror-ambient feel of their first collaboration, the first two tracks actually find both guitarists exploring the brighter side of their spectrum, evoking the hope and the beauty represented in Christy Romanick's photographs that were again used for the artwork, in conjunction with Quach's sketches. Perhaps it was just a lovely sunny day when the recording took place. However, the sounds shift around darker tones in the second half, reaching as much of a party groove that ambient could ever reach, to end in a much somber mood evoking late-night exhaustion migraines and disturbed sleeps."

LUNAR MIASMA : crystal covered (basses frequences)
MP3: circle mountain (sample)

[Gr] From the vintage sounds of The Last Drop Of Weight to the lightness of Cream, through the intense immersion of Circle Mountain and Crystal Covered, Panos Alexiadis shows what he is capable of. Crystal Covered is the outcome of his solo work. His previous releases lead you to this, an inner travel full of colors, warm and in some ways, psychedelic. A new, deep, intense fix for all lovers of Expo 70 and Emeralds' drones.

LOCRIAN : territories (basses frequences & bloodlust! & small doses & a war with false noise)

[USA] André Foisy and Terence Hannum have spent the last several years honing the Locrian sound. They've taken elements from noise, power electronics, drone, and black metal to come up with a truly unique sound reflecting the sprawling urban decay surrounding them in Chicago. After nearly two dozen releases, they've found themselves in the world of Territories. For this release, Locrian has pulled out all the stops and fleshed out the band with the help of Mark Solotroff (Bloodyminded, Anatomy of Habit) on vocals and synthesizers, Blake Judd (Nachtmystium) on guitar, Bruce Lamont (Yakuza) on saxophone and vocals, and Andrew Scherer (Velnias) on drums. The results of this massive collaborative effort are apparent from the moment the album starts. The textures run darker and deeper; the vocals--sometimes three layers deep--seem to be conjured from the decrepit muck of a failed civilization; the feedback takes on a more pronounced presence; and the big band allows for full-on black metal assaults that burst out of the tortured drones Locrian have come to be known for. Truly a case of the whole being greater than the sum of the parts, Territories may well be the most fully realized form of Locrian's dystopic vision.

deANIMATOR : ((thirty three and one third) degrees) per second (basses frequences)
MP3: killing of the divine king (sample)

[H] Brian McKenna, despite the lack of physical releases, is not a new comer. he is a visual artist and has experimented a lot with sounds and analog gears (mostly home made) in the past, but never released anything officially until his track on the Drones, Tones and Various Repressed Emotions CDR last year. The present release shows two different sides of his audio work: while Killing Of The Divine King (see sound sample) and Terminus are two immersive, huming drones, Ghosts & Stooges is a blast of free analog experimentations.

AIDAN BAKER : blue figures (basses frequences)
MP3: figures part 1 (sample)

[CA] after weeks of delay, the new massive live album from Aidan Baker is finally available ! it consists of two live sets (70 min +), one with "figures" and the other with an unreleased drone and "gathering blue". both sets recorded last spring during his extensive european tour, solo or with Nadja.
i have to confess that i've never been a sucker for live albums, it's pretty rare when i find them really interesting or better than the original studio versions. but of course, there are a few exceptions and Aidan Baker is one of them. his live performances are always surprising, not to say amazing. and his previous live albums are perfect exemples of what he is capable of when he's on stage. you already know the songs but it's always a bit different, there are variations, extensions, improvisations. Aidan dig in his own material to find a new vision. and you won't be disapointed here !
last but not least, the sound quality is stunning.

LOCRIAN : rain of ashes (basses frequences)
MP3: sample

[US] "Recorded with no overdubs and no other takes, Locrian went into WMUC studios located at College Park, Maryland to record what became much more than just a session. “Rain of Ashes” is a journey, not of complex feelings, but of realizing the decay and collapse you have just witnessed is real and will never go away. Instead of completely pummeling the listener, the piece slowly rips the listener apart until there is nothing left."
previously released on cassette on fan death records, the two tracks have been properly mastered at Chicago Mastering Service by for a more intense and definitive experience.

A.R.RANGER : variations over laura palmer's theme (basses frequences & TTTP)

Released in conjonction with the "tribute to Twin Peaks" exhibition at the Black Cat Bones Café, Puebla, Mexico in october 2009.

ANDREAS BRANDAL : a history of labyrinths (basses frequences)
MP3: the mirror... (sample)

[No] "A History Of Labyrinths" was recorded in an old abandoned house on the west coast of Norway during easter 2009. The album was created using a lot of old equipment that was found in the house, including guitars, tapes, gramophones, mouth harp, radio, an old synth, and field recordings from inside and around the building. The idea was to hopefully capture some of the atmosphere from that place.
The calm surroundings, with vast mountains and woods, combined with a gloomy, and at times creepy feeling of being alone with all the ghosts of this huge and labyrinthic house at night.
There are elements of drone, improvisation, some kind of primitive "doom",
loops and more ambient spaces...

YUI ONODERA & THE BEAUTIFUL SCHIZOPHONIC : radiance (basses frequences)

[JP/PORT] here are some words from Will Long of Celer about radiance: "Few composers of modern music produce works that are continually awe-inspiring, captivating, and original as Yui Onodera and The
Beautiful Schizophonic. Their collaborative work 'Radiance', offers an absolute experience of tenderly-crafted, hidden elegance, audible and pure instrumentation, and field recording realism. 'Radiance' breathes
with lightness, and most importantly, majesty."

NICHOLAS SZCZEPANIK : the chiasmus (basses frequences & sentient recognition archive)
MP3: the silhouette of a winter's sunset (sample)

[USA] Nicholas' debut CD is much more than an impeccably constructed piece of abstract drone music: The Chiasmus undulates between waves of quiet melancholy and overwhelming beauty, with small slices of pointillistic noise. an album where the emotional response is always the central focus rather then pure aesthetic concerns, the nuances of The Chiasmus are only revealed upon multiple listens; by then, the listener is completely tuned into the world it presents.
packaged in a jewel with a 16 pages booklet of art by Avery McArthy.

ELEMENTAURAL RESEARCH PROJECT : elementality (basses frequences)
MP3: opening flower

[SE] this has been a very challenging release for me. Anders Peterson (also known as relapshychO and for his works with rapoon and merzbow - among others) comes from a very different world than "plain" droneland and came to me with very different records from what i'm used to. but i liked the organic sounds made from field recordings of the 4 elements mixes with the guitars, bass and female vocals he recorded. this is actually not "drone" but really worth the listen. opening flower is a good example of how the record sounds like.
the CD includes exclusive bonus tracks: the eastern winds EP and the pre-elementality demos.

NADJA : corrasion (basses frequences)
MP3: basefluid

[CA] Basses Frequences is damn proud to finally give the vinyl treatment to what is certainly Nadja's finest full-length recording. "Corrasion" has Nadja in full doom mode; it is an extraordinary mix of slow, heavy, and layered guitar riffs and the ultra-dense-yet-melodic-drones that have become Nadja's trademark.
"Corrasion" has been re-mastered for the vinyl release and includes an exclusive, extended version of the title track as well as the outstanding "numb" to expand on the 2007 CD release. Strictly limited to 400 copies on 180 gram black vinyl ( and 100 on 180 gram blue vinyl - sold out ) packaged in a full-color gatefold sleeve.

BERGA & IVERSEN : the luminous disc in the sky (dead pilot )

[No]" Legendary experimental droners Bjerga/Iversen need no introduction. They've been on the scene for years now and have truly honed their sound to perfection. They've had releases on all the great DIY/CDr labels and have now they've contributed to Dead Pilot. Here they present a static tinged minimalism piece that ranges from deep buzzing tones to industrial wails to crippled electronics. A murky drift through a ruined future. Deep, and highly recommended if you've checked out the Hourglass Drops/Wereju and Dead Wood/Phantom Heron Seas splits".

BLACK BONED ANGEL : the witch must be killed (conspiracy)

[NZ] "Builds on Black Boned Angels initial premise of 'do nothing, very loud, for a long time, better than other people'. Perhaps the best example thus far and in spite of the obviously extreme-metal reference points, these two 'songs' (yes, they ARE songs) come across as decidedly 'beautiful'. More than a passing nod to Judas Priest also. Limited to 500 copies"
fantastic new release from Campbell Kneale ! highly recommanded

LP 12€

BLACK BONED ANGEL : verdun (riot season)

[NZ] "Definitely a different beast than many of the older BBA records, which blended the kitchen sink drones of Birchville Cat Motel with a sort of abstract black doom element, Verdun is more of a proper metal record, although to be sure 'proper metal record' is really relative, since as metal as this is, it's also just as much an experimental doomdronedirge record, regardless, it is maybe the most fully realized Black Boned Angel record yet, not sure if it's THAT RIFF, or because Kneale just keeps getting better and better, or because it's a concept record, so it's essentially a suite of interconnected songs. It's actually probably a little of all three, although as you might have guessed, we're definitely leaning toward THAT RIFF.

MARK BRADLEY : sanctity (strate cortex)

[US] "What better way to energise yourself for the week's reviews than with a bit of droney ambience? I don't know about you but something about beatless, moody soundscapes seriously gets my blood pumping! I'm off for a quick few laps of the car park, see you in a min... Phew.. OK, this one's by Mark Bradley and snideyness aside it's actually really good, provoking comparisons with James Kirby (aka The Current Undefeated Don of This Shit) with its manipulations of evaporating clouds of sound which create sombre visions of a vague, abstract sort of decay forever coming into focus before you but never quite fully appearing. Occasionally though some sort of rhythmical anchor does appear, taking things almost into the realms of particularly downbeat dubbiness. A strong release I think." (Brett @ Norman Rds)

MARK BRADLEY : eternal (blackest rainbow)

[Ru] "Two great new pieces by this russian artist from the Moscow-area, most sensible & emotional drone-ambience, a graceful dance of acoustic reflections & resonances. "Spectral Ship" and "Tidal Fire" appear like universal mantras, revealing the basic HUM of the universe. These works seem to represent perfectly the concept of the SUBSTANTIA-series: Sound that exists but which is not originating from the impact of two subjects in contact. Sound that is simply "there", with no beginning or ending."

STEFAN KUSHIMA / JOE CHAINSAW : mouthful of ghosts (dead pilot )

[UK] "Entry number 4 in the split series sees the pairing of 2 great young talents in the noise/underground scene. Stefan Kushima, hailing from Linz/Berlin and Joey Chainsaw, who is from all over the UK. Kushima, known for his releases on Blackest Rainbow and his own label Disappearance opens the split with a 14 minute epic. Beginning with an outburst of wailing guitars, sounding like a sort of satanic cry from the depths of hell, the piece gradually picks up pace with subtle percussion and layers of synth drones, swells and sweeps. When it gets in full motion, more howls and cries dance and echo above the noise. A full on bleak assault. Joey begins the second half of the split with high pitched electronic synth gargles and guitar moans n' groans before taking us into more warm drone territory. The final track combines the above two with haunting broken vocals and organs/synths, all pushed to the red creating a twisted and eerie wall of ghostly noise"

[US] "Since their inception in late 2005, Locrian have been honing their sound; working and re-working material; finding the right blend of noise, power electronics, dark ambient, and black metal to work into their sound. Drenched Lands is Locrian’s first full-length studio recording of all new material, and unfolds with an almost narrative structure. It starts with a slow descent into a dark abyss, moving torturedly, gradually rediscovering the light, then leaving you where everything began - completely transformed. The hour-long disc is rounded out by an extended bonus track previously unavailable in any digital format."

NADJA & OVO : the life and death of a wasp (vendetta & adagio)

[CA/It] "Over the last few dogs days of summer 2008, Italy’s OvO and Canada’s Nadja, got together in their adoptive city of Berlin at Einstürzende Neubauten’s andereBaustelle Studio. With engineer Boris Wilsdorf at the board, each duo began two songs and had the other duo finish them, Bruno and Stefania adding heavy, pounding rhythms and harsh, eerie vocals to Aidan and Leah’s ambient textures and bass-heavy drones. The album, while still heavy and still retaining signature sounds of both groups, turned out groovier and mellower than either band expected. But this mellowness gives the songs a greater sense of presence and allows for the intricacies and nuances of each individual’s contributions to be properly heard. With a final mastering by James Plotkin, this album sounds simultaneously harsh and lush, aggressive and warm. Having coffee after the sessions in the back garden, a wasp drugged on sugar flew into Leah’s coffee cup and drowned itself, traumatizing everyone at the table."

MEN SCRYFA : the sky was troubled with the dread strength of the wind (small doses)

Atavist is a good starting point to envision the sound for this project, but they take the sound in different directions than the band that brought them together. It's heavy and plodding, but progressive and melodic with spoken vocals. It feels a bit like a doom metal version of something from Slint's Spiderland record. Absolutely fantastic."

NADJA : clinging to the edge of the sky (vendetta)

[CA] 'Clinging To The Edge Of The Sky' sees Nadja taking a new (and unexpected) direction. It is not the Nadja most people are used to. It is a more scaled down, minimalistic and naked sound. There is almost a total lack of distortion, and it is not as heavy or noisy as most of their earlier releases. One song, spanning 16 minutes, takes you on a sad and slow journey. It is hypnotic, it is soothing. It is Nadja! Comes with a laser etched B-side.

LAURENT PERRIER : as far as (sound on probation)

[FR] "Created for Alban Richard’s choreographic show of the same name, “as far as” -slightly modified for its release on CD - is a sound structure built on classical music samples, off beat loops, collages, quotations. The album starts with a long, minimal, repetitive track - organ sequences and micro events reminding one of some of Charlemagne Palestine’s pieces. “As far as” is a work where emotion prevails on abstraction, a long heady, cinematic development, a play on volumes and contrasts like hesitating between total anguish and peaceful contemplation. The musical form thus created is the prelude to an almost apocalyptic noise swoop which, in an oddly beautiful manner, finally transforms itself into a collage of orchestrated violins, illusion of infinity meeting a most abrupt end. "

Grounded Hand is a mass in disarray, a collage of cracking and clicking sounds, clinical minimal repetitive heartbeat inviting listeners to follow its author through an experience of granular meditation, a dive into crunching, vibrating sound material.
If the first part is made of harsh abstract compositions, the second part opens up to space, to cinematic, contemplative atmospheres."

SHRINE : distorted legends (drone rds)

[UK] "Behind SHRINE we find a fresh experimental drone project from Bulgaria (currently residing in England) combining the melancholia of distorted synths with odd micro noises & effects. The fusion of rough and thunderous drones with hidden melodies evokes a strong emotional impact, like the feeling of being stuck in a confusing dream. SHRINE's philosophy shows a way to realize that what we call “reality” is to be mistrusted based upon our usual perceptions. An outstanding piece of melodic genius; euphoric and intense and filled with overwhelming emotion. At around the 5 and a half minute mark in this track, your hairs will stand on end and you will be lifted out of your body and mind, transcending into pure bliss. Ant has channeled some deep emotions into his work on this album. It's intensity, along with it's fragility, evokes otherworldly imagery and feelings. but even that is sometimes relegated to whirring way off in the distance, while harmonics sparkle and rhythms shuffle, but just as often, the drone wipes the slate clean, and all the OTHER elements drift and
whirl in the background while the drone rumbles and buzzes."

Seemingly familiar ethnic melodies decay and drone, with subtle turns of well-crafted and honed vision. Not unlike great film art, all composition leads to that awkward moment of dumbstruck awe upon completion, bathed in the deafening silence before one, then several, and finally thunderous audience applause bursts forth. Combining four of Wada's self-made "pipehorns" (made from plumbing materials, over three meters in length), with an electronic drone tuned to the electrical current of the performance space, this is a lost masterpiece of early minimalism, placing Wada rightfully in the pantheon with La Monte Young, Phill Niblock, Maryanne Amacher and Alvin Lucier. Recorded live in Syracuse, New York, this recording captures the room-filling complex overtones generated by the ever-shifting interplay of the breathing horns and the constant electronic drone. This is a music of ritual hypnotic power, its heavy low end mass and sense of change within constancy engendering a meditative transcendency."
